Shadow players excel in 2015 college campaigns

The 2015 collegiate season was a highly successful one in the region and quite a few Spokane SC Shadow alumni played a part in it. Five former Shadow youth and First Team players received top awards in their respective leagues for outstanding seasons and six were honored as regional All-Americans.

Starting close to home, the Whitworth men captured the Northwest Conference championship again thanks to a trio of seniors with Shadow on their resume. Former Shadow youth player Karl Muelheims finished as the scoring champion and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. His fellow Shadow First Team players Spencer Wolfe and Sam Engle also played key roles. Engle, a regional All-American selection at forward, helped make the Pirates an offensive force while Wolfe guided the defense to an outstanding campaign, earning the league's Defensive Player of the Year award along with regional and national All-American honors. On the women's side, Tiara Pajimola was again recognized as an All-Conference selection for the Pirates.

A little further away, Eastern Washington experienced its best season ever in the Big Sky Conference thanks to a handful of former Shadow youth. Among them were the sophomore forward duo of Chloe Williams and Savannah Hoekstra, who both earned All-Conference selections. Williams was also recognized as the league's Offensive MVP. Also earning All-Conference recognition in the Big Sky was Alyssa Lloyd, who helped lead Idaho to the regular season title and runners-up finish in the postseason tournament, and Montana's Ashlee Pedersen.

Also close to home, the CC Spokane men's and women's sides captured the regular season division titles in the Northwest Athletic Conference this year and both reached the NWAC Final Four thanks to a number of Shadow alumni. The women captured the league championship under former Shadow coach Jim Martinson with outstanding efforts from Maddy Boyd, Sarah Melvin, Erica Simpson and Kelsi Walker. The men's side came up short on the short side in a 4-3 championship game in which Shadow players were present on both sides. Former Shadow youth players Jonathan Cortez, also from the Shadow First Team, and Kelly Kyllo were honored as All-Stars for the Bigfoot, who were edged for the title by Peninsula College, which featured NWAC All-Star Trevan Estrellado and Micah Weller, both former Shadow First Team players. In addition to Martinson, the coaching staffs for both Bigfoot teams hold many Shadow ties as men's head coach Kenny Krestian was a member of the Shadow PDL side in the 90s along with his CCS assistant and current Shadow FT coach Chad Brown. Assistant coach Brock Ogami is a current Shadow youth coach and FT assistant and goalkeeper coach Jeff Srock helped lead the First Team to the EPLWA title last season.

In Seattle, a pair of Shadow alumni dominated in their respective positions. Julia Moravec led Seattle University to another great season in the Western Athletic Conference, earning the league's Offensive Player of the Year award. Meanwhile, Cody Lang, a youth and First Team alum, guided Seattle Pacific in another outstanding campaign and was recognized as the GNAC Defensive Player of the Year along with receiving regional All-American honors.
